Thinking May Not Help You

The drunkard can’t imagine life without alcohol. Those shrouded in delusion and who experience the emotional and spiritual suffering that goes with it are afraid of awakening from it. And those who seek their comfort in ”control” often drive the “car of their lives” off a cliff when they try to steer it where THEY want to go.

The unknown can be scary for all of us. But what do we really know anyway? We must learn to soar in the unknown sooner or later if we would awaken from the dream of our suffering and limitation. Most of us live in the bubble of what we accept as real or important based on past experience. But life is not set-up to protect this bubble. In fact, I have found that no matter how hard I try to protect it, my own bubble of  comfort is never safe! It seems that life is mysteriously designed to pop our bubble as many times as needed in order to push us forward in our spiritual growth until we finally realize our highest truth as one with all.*

Breathe and relax into whatever troubles you. Feel a willingness to accept things as they are right now. Try to feel your chest and heart open and relax. This might come with some fear or emotion. But don’t let that stop you from releasing any tension you have. Try to make peace with what you feel, don’t try to suppress it, but let it go. Even visualize it rising upward into the sky. See it shrinking in the distance until it disappears.

Now go back to your breath and feel it’s peace in your heart. Fell fresh and clean inside, and taste each new breath as it fills your heart with peace. Feel a small bubble of peace at your center, but don’t hold on to it tightly. Instead, try to feel your bubble of peace expanding in all directions. Allow your experience of Peace to expand and to bless others in all directions. Allow it to reach beyond any challenge you face and to hold the situation and people who may be involved, in the Peace, Light, and Love of your heart.

Do what you must to feel awe, wonder, and gratitude in the quiet of your own heart daily. Inner Peace is required to be able to truly experience or share anything of depth with others.

Keep expanding your bubble of Peace and Love. If you do this, you’ll be guided to make the right choices and to live in a way that is harmonious and fulfilling, no matter what challenges come your way.

Peace and Joy to You,

turiya

I look forward to your thoughts or questions as always.

*The bubble of our love is not like bubbles found on the material plane. Those are more prone to burst if they continue to expand, but the bubble of our love finds strength in expansion and only becomes fragile if we try to limit its growth.

Stop Negative Thoughts

It’s natural to try to reason ones way out of harmful thinking, but in my experience, reason is not a reliable way for me to become positive. Underlying reason is a layer of feeling, attitude, and the force of habit that colors my thoughts.

I think of thoughts as plants in my “mental garden.” Sure there are some deep-rooted weeds, but they do not deserve all of my attention. If I only focused on the weeds my good plants would die, leaving me with an empty plot of dirt for a mind. Yuck!

I don’t want my life to be empty like a dirt lot. Some speak of “nothing-ness” or “emptiness” as a spiritual goal. Maybe it’s semantics, but I don’t think of fulfillment as empty. My experience of fulfillment is never empty.

The garden in my mind is full of beautiful flowers and they way I grow them is by putting energy into beautiful thoughts and feelings. Instead of obsessing on the weeds I must water, love and feed my positive thoughts.

The underlying layers feeling, attitude, and habit are the soil I plant in. It’s hard for blossoms to rise from a dry bed of rocks.

Here are some suggestions for softening and enriching the “attitude soil” of your own mind.

Softening:

  • Don’t take yourself so seriously. J. Donald Walters writes: “The secret of happiness is the ability to congratulate oneself happily on one’s own unimportance while others vie for supremacy.” This is just one of the “secrets” from his book, “Secrets of Happiness.” This little book has helped me immensely.
  • Learn from your mistakes. I have made many awesome mistakes! My level of ignorance coupled by my insatiable desire to do something!, and lack of patience have made for some great stories! But at the same time, I do learn from these episodes. If I don’t learn anything but to be more humble, then that must be exactly what I need.
  • Have great respect for your ability to be wrong. This is not negative thinking. Negativity comes from the lack of acceptance that you and others are not perfect.
  • Stop judging others. If you believe we should be happy, kind, and loving. Why on earth would you join the army of sadness by judging others? It’s a habit. It’s not helping them, or you. By reacting to what you do not like, you have become an agent for what you yourself want end. It’s a trick of the devil. If you believe in a higher power, let Him, or It, or She, run the world. Of course you must do your part, but your part is not to control others, ever. If you think it is, than I don’t know how you’ll ever be happy. People need to learn at their own pace, and the best way to influence others is by our own example. Our joy and contentment is both a flower and a sword.
  • Remember everyone is doing the best they can. No matter how silly or criminally humans behave, underlying all of our nonsense is the desire to do what is right. Understanding this is a major step toward unconditional love and happiness.

Enriching: (Fertilize your mind with positive energy)

  • Feed your garden with Love! Seek out and embrace opportunities to help others without a thought for yourself. Just do it! Being helpful and serving is healing for you. By putting energy in this direction we can starve the weeds of self-involvement that feed our own negativity.
  • Water your garden with Joy! Fill your mind with positive energy through uplifting music, company, reading. Find one soul affirming song recorded by someone with uplifting consciousness (it matters) and listen to it all the time until it permeates your consciousness. Music has a unique ability to transmit and influence consciousness. Misery loves company, so be careful what you to listen to, and how you choose it. Lean toward what you aspire toward instead of what feels comfortable if you can.

  • Let the sun shine! Take care of your body through daily doses of fresh air, sunshine, brisk exercise, and fresh, healthy, natural food. Foods do affect our way of thinking. Read more about diet here.
  • Worry Fasting! Nothing good ever came from worry. If it’s a deep habit start with short fasts. Commit to ten minutes once or twice per day. Fill your mind with positive energy. A song, holy scripture, guided meditation, positive affirmation, or go work in your garden, or a nice walk in nature if possible. Smile for no reason. Laugh because it feels good. If you catch yourself worrying, you must also laugh at this. Practice each day, and gradually increase the length of fast until this becomes your natural state of mind.
  • Say Yes to Life! Spiritual growth is directional. Stay in the Now by being perfectly content with where you are, and eagerly embrace whatever life tosses your way. Do not cling to anything. See life as a school. Be a good student, and have lots of fun.

For myself, daily meditation has been key to my success in the above suggestions.

Here is one of my favorite affirmations:

“As I radiate love and goodwill to others, I will open the channel for God’s love to come to me. Divine love is the magnet that draws to me all good.”

From Scientific Healing Affirmations, by Paramhansa Yogananda

Why I need to paint.

Art has always been an interesting experience for me. I like to think I have an eye for beauty and I am quite clear about what I enjoy and what I enjoy less when it comes to art. In fact most of it doesn’t interest me at all.

I have a very difficult time in my art class. It may be one of the most challenging experiences in my life right now. It’s worse than preparing for taxes! Painting is something I have always been a bit scared of, and I can get quite frustrated and feel mean toward my teacher, (who is also my best friend). You see, I’m pretty good at other stuff with my hands but I also like to make things “perfect” whatever that means. And still, the art that inspires me is never perfect in the way I feel forced to paint. It’s free and comes from the heart, it’s joyful and light instead of heavy or dark. It’s painted as a child would paint. That is what I want to do. I want to be free to flow and not get stuck thinking. It’s the way I try to live, but this painting thing is like the last holdout in my mental garden. It’s got deep strong roots going somewhere.

You know what? A stranger could walk up to me and spit in my face and I could still love him, and not judge him. I’m really very ok with people, death, loss, and financial instability. But when Ashleigh asks me to plop paint on my paper without hesitating I could just cap her! I’m really not mad at her, but she’s the one that’s delivering the lesson so, I do sort of get bugged at her. It’s almost chemical.

This is why I have decided to take my art class. I want to get better! Here is a look at my battle. These three are from me with lots of support from my wonderful teacher. Sharing these, I hope is a step in the right direction for me.

My goal is to overcome the obstacles that keep me from serving God and His creatures perfectly. I want Him to be able to express His love through me and I suspect this issue with painting is part of something bigger I need to overcome. I’m not wasting any time. I am taking this on. I’m going to have fun painting if it kills me. That’s sort of a joke. :-)

I always like to hear your thoughts. I hope you like the new style for my blog, and that you are having a super awesome day.

in joy,
